Track by Track + Small Review: Evile's Infected Nations

Track by Track to Infected Nations 

Infected Nation – Now this is the way to start an album. This has a clean intro that is eerie and get you excited, then comes the heavy riff. This song turns into mayhem the second Matt Drake gets to the mic. On this album Matt changed his vocals and I personally love them, very Max Cavalera like. The chorus is actually kind of catchy when “INFECTED NATION!” is yelled it just sounds awesome. Then Ol Drake takes the spotlight with another one of his solos, In my eyes he is really becoming one of the best lead players in metal. His leads are fast, exciting and crystal clear, he is one guy who I cant wait to see evolve and how good he can get because right now there aren’t many better. This song slows down a bit in the outro and I think this was the best song to open the album with. This song reminded me of listening to And Justice For All... for the first time and hearing Blackened.

 Now Demolition – This may be my favorite song off the album as of now, but I’ve been listening to it for 2 months now on myspace. This has more of a mid-tempo riff and the vocals are working perfectly with the song. The Chorus is just classic, nothing more to say. Ol Drake builds his solo up slowly and my god he absolutely murders, this is another amazing solo however it’s a bit slower which I like. This is overall a slower song then anything on Enter The Grave but is much heavier.

 Nosophoros – Is another song that has been out for a while and I never really got into. It’s got a decent heavy riff that speeds up in to the verse. Matt’s vocals are really guttural here, more growl then he’s ever done. After the chorus it breaks down into a cool chuggy riff, it kind reminds me of The Metal by Tenacious D (haha!). Ol does another slow intro to the solo and doesn’t disappoint, you’ll have to BUY this album and give it a listen to really get how good he is at what he does. They break it down for the outro again which I love. Good song, not great and definitely not as good as the first two and what is to come.

 Genocide – The intro to this song is awesome, really makes you want to just throw the Devil-Horns up. It starts at slow with some high-pitched lead work and then this really heavy guitar riff. Then the drums really start kicking, the guitars then do this really cool trade off thing with the bass. The Verse riff is extremely heavy and memorable. Matt is really sounding like Justice era Hetfield here and I’m digging it. The riff and tempo don’t really change for the chorus and then here comes another solo, I really cant say much more about Ol, If I still haven’t made my point about him, This is one of the best lead performances on the century, I could say decade but century sounded cooler. This song is 7:42 so its full of solo’s so Ol really takes over. I first realized how good the lead work worked with the Rhythms on this track; i guess it helps when the guitarists are brothers. The vocals are surprisingly hooky on this song, just a great performance on the Drake brother’s part.

 Plague To End All Plagues – This album starts with a killer heavy and fast riff. The verse is a pretty normal metal riff, galloping with some power chords but it’s really focused on the vocals, which are great. The chorus is just the title being recited, which is cool, but Matt seems a bit awkward hitting the high notes in the chorus. The solos sounds very much like a Dimebag (RIP) solo with the extensive use of the whammy bar and it sounds amazing, great lead work.

Devoid of Thought – This song really resembles the song THRASHER off Evile’s first album in the intro. The Verse is awesome though, really heavy riff. I wish they would have done more with the chorus all it is, is  “Devoid of though” yelled. The solo I won’t get into because it will have the same explanation of all the others.

 Time No More – Starts off with one of the best riffs on the album and the drumming is superb. This is the best song since the first two. The Verse invokes mayhem and the chorus is amazing and it’s actually a chorus! Not just repeating the title over and over. This breaks down with a new riff and its sweet, the solo is great not as mind-blowing as over but this song wasnt really calling for a long epic one.

 Metamorphasis – The song starts with a simple chord intro with the bass just chugging at the bottom end. The Verse and Chorus are heavy and this is also one of the better songs on the end, it is a lot heavier then it is fast. This song is an epic and has many parts to it and drags a little at times, I think on this and a lot of songs they drag out a lot of the instrumental bridges for too long. Ol Drake stands out again though.

 Hundred Wrathful Deities – This is an Instrumental Epic that I wont even explain. It shows the bands true musicianship and talent and I recommend you just listen for yourself.

 My Parasite (Bonus Track) – OH MY GOD, This song has such insane riffage its crazy, i have no idea why this wasnt on the album as a normal track. This is probably the most death metal track Evile has ever done and they really pull it off.  The solo is complete mayhem once again; Ol Drake has given us the best lead performance of the year hands down.

 

DVD – The DVD was just hilarious clips of the band and I suggest you pick it up its well worth it.

 Overall: This album isn’t as good as Enter The Grave but Evile are establishing there own sound and I’m in no way worried about their talent. Ol drake shows a lot of promise is his lead playing but the riffing just isn’t there yet, on Eviles next release if they get some better and more diversified riffs we could be looking at a masterpiece.

It's was 23 years ago today that Cliff Burton was taken from this earth in a cruel accident. Although I was not alive for this terrible tragedy, Cliff Burton and his music has influenced me in so many ways. I don't care if you think Metallica are old sellouts, Listen to some Cliff era Metallica today and pay your respects. He was onboard for the two greatest albums in history, Master of Puppets and Ride The Lighting and his music will live on forever.

Megadeth - ENDGAME Review

I don't care how much you hate Dave Mustaine if you listen to Megadeth's latest release Endgame you will get the same message everyone else took from it, DAVE MUSTAINE IS BETTER THAN YOU. Endgame is an all-out metal masterpiece and this album is tied for best album of the year with Lamb of God's Wrath in my mind, and this is after one listen. I've never been so excited about a Megadeth album after one listen. Dave Mustaine and Chris Broderick are matches made in heaven, Mustaine's signature rhythm’s go perfectly with Broderick's face melting leads. Broderick reminds me very much of Marty Friedman, but on steroids, this guy is as technically proficient as they get but still very soulful. Shawn Drover's drumming is great, not as stand out as the guitars but he really keeps the beat with some great classic Thrash Beats. James LoMenzo really followed the guitars on this album and his bass playing really added a lot of bottom end and it made the album sound huge. The Production was absolutely stellar, this album sounds huge and I have no idea how it’s contained on such a small disk (hehe). The guitar sound impressed me the most on this album, the low end is really tight and all the riffs sound extremely heavy as well as all the solos sounding absolutely shred-tastic. I can safely say this is also one of the cleanest guitar recordings I’ve ever heard and you can hear exactly what’s going on even with all the gain!

 

Now the Track by Track

 

Dialectic Chaos - Usually I enjoy albums with those slow epic intros like Annihilator's Alice in Hell opening with Crystal Ann. This album doesn’t do that but instead this song is an all out guitar duel that gets you pumped up like no other and the second it goes into the next track you are ready to mosh!

 

This Day We Fight! - This song starts from the get go, the second it starts you hear the famous snarl from Mr. Mustaine and he is ANGRY! This is a war anthem with a really head-banging heavy riff and the leads are just classic shred licks. This is the perfect song to have after the epic Dialectic Chaos and it's everything you expect from Megadeth.

 

44 Minutes - This is an instant classic, possibly the best on the album. 44 minutes is about a bank robbery in California in 1997 and has just astounding lyrics recapping this event. The verses remind me of Symphony of Destruction and the chorus is like no other, it's extremely catchy with Dave Mustaine's more melodic vocals and a great slow lead guitar line. Broderick really played his heart out on this track, anywhere there should be a lead guitar lick there is and his solo trade offs with Mustaine can only be described with one word, orgasmic. This track is set to be a classic and will be blasting in arenas and theaters across the world the second Dave and the crew gets on the road.

 

1,320 – This song draws you in with a riff that is powerful and reminds me of something that would be on Countdown, which I’m not complaining about, it also reminds me of the intro in Sabbra Cadabra by Black Sabbath. This song seems to be about a drag race of sort and it really does have that feel, it’s a song you’d hear right before the cars went off at a NASCAR race and I wouldn’t be surprised if they started using it. Once again Broderick is very present with lightning fast licks and great solo trade offs with Mustaine.

 

Bite the Hand – A classic Mustaine political song, the Intro/Main riff has a lot of chug that really makes you want to head bang. The other riff is just a classic Deth’ crazy speed riff. The vocal hooks aren’t as good on this song and Broderick on this song but that being said, I really think this song was begging for a classic Mustaine solo like on Wake up Dead.

 

Bodies – Was another song that was just screaming Countdown to Extinction. It had the verse that was more focused on the Bass and Drums and LoMenzo and Drover really held it together and the song had a chorus that I’m pretty sure people who like pop could sing along to, what I mean is that the vocal/guitar hooks are great. It then goes into a great slow break down with great guitar work from the Dynamic Duo, I really enjoyed the use of harmony here and it’s the first time I’ve really heard it on the album. Then comes the old school solo, Mustaine comes in with a great solo intro and then Broderick takes over. Yet another great song by the boys in Deth’.

 

Endgame – The title track, and there is a reason the album was named after this song, yet another classic. This is song starts announcement telling people to report the there Distract Detention Centers similar to United Abominations and it really sets the mood for the song and gets you pumped. This intro is big and segways perfectly into a great heavy metal riff that’s dark and chugs like no other, Mustaine’s voice is sounding better than ever in these verses. This song reminds me a lot of Testaments – The New Order, musically and lyrically. The solo licks are killer but i think you can really feel the passion in them to, they remind me so much of the classic Friedman solo’s and I think Mustaine really got the right guy for lead guitar on this album. This song drags on a little at times but otherwise this is another song that I cant wait to see live.

 

The Hardest Part of Letting Go...Sealed with a Kiss – HOLY SHIT! This is the most impressive song musically Megadeth has ever done. It starts with an amazing acoustic guitar part and with strings or something orchestral in the background as well as Dave with some stellar vocals. Then comes a galloping riff at mid tempo with goes extremely well with Mustaine’s cleaner Vocals. The guitar fills are beautiful, they remind of a slower Gus G solo and how he can really put a lot of passion into his solos no matter how fast they are. “The hardest part of letting go is saying goodbye...” Mustaine says this part with so much passion he really takes over the song with his voice, this song will be on repeat for a long time with me.

 

Head Crusher – You’ve been hearing this heavy beast for months so I’m going to keep it short. This is just a thrashy fast song with, a Fast Riff, Snarl Vocals and Fast Lead parts, what more do you expect?

 

How The Story Ends – This song is built around a great riff that sounds like it could be on Killing Is My Business... Dave’s voice is a bit less aggressive here and I think it went extremely well with the riff. One thing that really impressed me on this song and throughout the whole album was how good the chorus hooks are. In one part there is a small clean solo over the heavy riff, like 99 Ways to Die, and then had a old school shredding solo. Just a great track!

 

The Right To Go Insane – On first listen I was a little disappointed by this song because I was expecting something a lot heavier because of the name, I wanted a mosh pit anthem. That being said this still a great medium tempo song with a riff that really reminded me of the classic Architecture of Aggression. This song has one of the best solos on the album; it’s fast but very passionate as well. Broderick is really reminding me of Gus G on this album

 

Overall this may turn out to be the best Megadeth album of all time and if not, barely behind RIP and Countdown. This may be Megadeth’s best lineup ever but I still wish Ellefson would come back because I adore his bass lines. No album this year really even comes close besides Lamb of God’s Wrath and I can’t wait to see Dave and the boys on tour!

5 Reasons to Hate and Stop the Use of Genre in Metal (Not in Order)

1. With so many genres it’s hard to just keep track of them and it distracts you from the music, which is all that matters. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_metal_subgenres ... Does anyone else find it obscene that there is that many Sub-Genres?!?!
2. Misleading Names. Ok look at sub-genre Metal-core (the combination of Hardcore Punk and Heavy Metal), Look at the biggest bands in Metal-Core, Trivium, Bullet for My Valentine and Killswitch Engage, All great bands. Can someone please show me the hardcore part though?? KSE and Trivium both have very little hardcore in there sound and if anything they are both thrash metal bands before anything else. BFMV has absolutely no hardcore in their sounds and they are the poster boys for Metalcore, they are hard rock with scream vocals if anything. This is only one of the examples that show that a lot of genres don’t really correspond very well with the music.
3. War of Genre. I’m not even going to go into this very much but does anyone else get very annoyed with the whole Black Metal vs. Death Metal war with some people. They are two very similar styles of metal that are both amazing in similar as well as in there own ways and many people still say you have to like one and hate the other. This is only one example but if people keep doing stuff like this we are going to have 40 groups of “metalheads” yelling at each other defending their favorite styles of metal, and I know I couldn’t only listen to one.
4. Artists are being Limited and Suffering Musically. No artist wants to make the same album 10 times, unless you’re Slayer but they are the only band that can really pull it off. I think bands should grow over time even if it means not being in the stupid specific subgenre they were in before. I’m not defending albums like Risk (Megadeth), The Loads (Metallica) and The Crusade (Trivium), in my eyes these were albums that were made to enter the mainstream and I hate that, Thank god all these bands returned to form though after these stints. When you try to become mainstream when you are a metal band you will do two things, fail and alienate fans, so bands please don’t do it. I’m defending albums like The Black Album (Metallica) as well as Blooddrunk and Are You Dead Yet? (CoB). For both bands these albums were a departure from their previous albums, Metallica was simpler and bigger sounding and CoB was more straightforward and less neo-classical. These albums were both ridiculed for being “sellouts” because some people thought they were more mainstream. Those three albums were amazing regardless of what people say and just because there was a genre change that does not mean the band sucks. Also anyone who said Bodom sold out is retarded because if anything they got heavier and still get little airplay, I dont think we will hear Hellhounds on my Trail on Radio Disney anytime soon. If you are one of those people please listen to those albums again and don’t hate amazing bands for changing their style because pretty much every metal band who’s been around for 10+ years have. Also Wrath and Sacrament (Lamb of God) were being called sellouts but I thought this was so stupid I didn’t even bother using it as an example. Another problem is I find a lot of new bands sound similar because they are being forced to make lets say a death metal album like everyone else is making death metal at that time and it’s not letting the genre evolve and produce more classic bands, the same can be said for Thrash, Black and pretty much every other genre of metal.
5. Suffering Tours. Live Shows are the biggest part of metal and they all ways have and will be, but now in modern metal I find most tours you go and see 3-4 similar bands and it’s quite boring because every band just a shitty version of the headliner. This is something that is improving though with Bands like Slipknot brining bands on tour like Coheed and Cambria and Trivium, very diverse show. As well as all the bands Metallica brings out, Machine Head, Gojira, Lamb of God, Volbeat, The Sword and many more. Overall I think all bands should catch on to this and give us more diversified and fun shows. That being said I’d like to give a shoutout to Mayhem Fest this year because I think they really gave all the fans a diversified show with bringing out death metal bands like Whitechapel and Cannibal Corpse, Black Metal Bands like Behemoth, Thrashier bands like the all mighty SLAYERRRRR as well as Trivium and Hard Rock bands like BFMV and Marilyn Manson

 

 

 

My solution, Metal Should have 2 genres only Heavy Metal and Extreme Metal, Because every band should try to create their own genre and their own style of music and Having all these names for their music and being labeled takes away from that. I think having only 2 categories makes it so bands can just say we are heavy or really heavy and work in those guidelines.

 

Here’s a few examples of Heavy Metal: Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Trivium, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Evile, Power Metal Bands should also go in this category, Dream Theater and Symphony x.. Of Course there are more but I’m pretty sure you can figure out the rest.

 

Here’s a few examples of Extreme Metal: Cannibal Corpse, Whitechapel, Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir, Venom, Death, Slayer, Slipknot (don’t bitch at them they are amazing), Lamb of God, Obituary, Deicide, Children of Bodom, Kalmah and Mayhem... Once again there are more extreme metal bands but I think this will give you a rough view of what extreme metal is.
